Bezit: ’s / ’ / of (possesive)

’s / ’

Als een persoon of dier iets bezit, of als iets bij een persoon of dier hoort.

Bij een woord in het enkelvoud of een naam 

(óók op -s / -x / -z) gebruik je ’s:

• my friend’s parents
• Norma's cook books
•  Dennis’s ball
• our cat’s behaviour

Bij een woord in het meervoud dat níét eindigt op -s gebruik je óók ’s:

• the children’s toys
• the men's pens

Bij een woord in het meervoud dat eindigt op -s gebruik je ’ :

• my parents’ car
• the cars' wheels

Als je het hebt over dingen:

•    the King of Rock and Roll
  
• the best goals of the World Cup
  

Als je het hebt over geografische locaties:

- This is the city of New York

• Singular noun: apostrophe + s  ('s)
• Plural noun: apostrophe  (')
  

The cat's couch .

(one cat)

The cats' couch .

(two or more cats)

• Notice how the number of couches does not matter

This structure can be used for whole phrases

• The cat next door's bed

(the bed of the cat next door)

• The Queen of France's  

(the cat of the queen of France)
