You are going to watch two video clips. In groups of 3, figure out the meaning of the following words that used in video no. 1:



1) i.e.

Gerund
Vorm
Werkwoord + -ing, zonder een vorm van to be; wordt als zelfstandig naamwoord gebruikt.

Gebruik
1 Na voorzetsels als about, without, to, from, for, on, of.  Example: My parents are talking about moving to another town.

2 Na bepaalde werkwoorden, zoals hate, like, stop, prefer, enjoy, avoid, remember, refuse, to mind, keep, spend.
Example: I hate working late!  

3 Als onderwerp. Example: Following his advice could get you into trouble.

4 Na enkele woorden en uitdrukkingen, zoals feel like, it’s no use, it’s worth, there’s no, be busy, can’t help.
Example:  Do you feel like going out on Friday?

Gerund

Let op!
Na de werkwoorden to stop, to remember en to forget kun je zowel de gerund als de infinitief gebruiken. Maar er is een verschil in betekenis

Ik stopte met roken. I stopped smoking.
Ik stopte om te roken. I stopped to smoke.

Ik herinner me nog dat ik m’n eerste fiets kocht. I remember buying my first bike.
Denk eraan een fiets te kopen. Remember to buy a bike.

Essay writing

  • Structure - intro/3 paragraphs/conclusion (= 5 paragraphs)
  • General topic (controversial) / short stories
  • Formal language
  • Avoid personal pronouns
  • Use linking words (also, moreover, even though, nonetheless etc.)
  • Use an general example ending in your topic statement (=thesis)

  • Make a list of the elements in your novels (characters/plot/setting)
  • Examples Discrimination (what happens in the novel)
  • Examples of Slavery (what happens in the novel)
  • Examples of influences on the main character
  • Development of the main character
  • Examples of oppression

Start writing down information on your novel:
discrimination, slavery, position of women, the law, seggregation of black and white, children during slavery etc.

Give examples of one of the above theme

Describe how these examples deal with your theme
