When to use it:
-use when the noun or adjective that comes next begins with a consonant sound. (A blue book, a union)
-use when the noun or adjective that comes next begins with a vowel sound.
(An old bike, an onion) 

A/An are used to describe one of many.

When to use it:
-use to refer to specific or particular nouns (when it's the only one)
(the book over there)
-use when you refer to something that's previously mentioned
(there are a lot of people in this restaurant, the people that come here...)
- use when you refer to a historical period, an ordinal number or a superlative adjective.

When:
- talking about things in general (homework gives me stress)

- you refer to countries, continents or cities (France, Europe, New York)
