Een adjective:
zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord
  • The singer sang an awful song.
komt na een koppelwerkwoord (be, become, appear, get, seem, sound, taste, feel, smell, look)
  • The song was awful.
  • That looked awful.

Een adverb zegt iets over:
  • een werkwoord: he sang terribly.
  • een bijvoeglijk naamwoord: he was terribly nice to us.
  • een bijwoord: time went by incredibly quickly.
  • een hele zin: fortunately, we were invited for the party.

Soms ook uitzonderingen:
good wordt niet goodly, maar well; fast blijft fast
