Active and Passive Sentences
  • Active: It is clear  who did the action.
Milan baked a cake.
  • Passive: The action is emphasised, not who did it.
A cake was baked (by Milan).

Why do we use the passive voice?
  • The passive voice is less personal.
  • It's used if we don't know who or what did something, or if the doer is not important.

How?
1. Place the object at the start of the sentence
2.Use a form of to be + past participle of the main verb
is/am/are 
were/was
is/am/are/were/was being

The thief stole the jewellery. >The jewellery was stolen (by the thief).
The girl brushes the horse. >The horse is being brushed  (by the girl).
