• Je gebruikt 's om bezit aan te geven in de volgende situaties
• Bij personen in het enkelvoud: the man's bike, the principal's office
• Bij namen: Thijs's girlfriend, Imre's drawing
• Bij tijd (in de zin van hoe lang iets duurt): an hour's walk from here, a three hour's drive
• Bij een plaats waarbij je de naam van het gebouw niet noemt: the baker's, the dentist's, the butcher's

• Soms gebruik je alleen de apostrofe
• Bij personen in het meervoud (regelmatige vorm, dus eindigt op -s en dus ook ALLEEN als het op -s eindigt): the boys' bikes, the girls' bedroom
• Bij namen uit de klassieke oudheid die eindigen op een -s: Socrates' ideas, Hippocrates' books

• Je gebruikt de constructie met 'of' bij de volgende zaken
• hoeveelheden: A bag of apples, a pound of cocaine
• aardrijkskundige namen: the wonderful village of Mill, the city of Nijmegen, the county of Boxmeer
