• Explorer Henry Hudson discovered a river, later named The Hudson River.

• new amsterdam was established by the dutch in 1624
• the english took over in 1664, and changed the new amsterdam into new york, named after the duke of york, future king James II
• New York played a crucial role in the American Revolution. It was the site of important battles, including the Battle of Saratoga, and was briefly the capital of the United States after the war. The city’s ports were a key resource for both the British and the American forces.
