Om te zeggen dat iets mogelijk is

Can- betekent dat het waarschijnlijk is.

-betekent dat het iets minder waarschijnlijk is

Can, could, to be able to

Als je iets kunt doen, als je het vermogen of de vaardigheid voor hebt, kun je can, could or to be able to.

Can- gebruik je alleen in de present simple (tegenwoordige tijd)

I can help him.                              Ik kan hem helpen.

Could- gebruik je voor iets wat mogelijk zou kunnen, en soms als verleden tijd van can.

I could help him.        Ik zou hem kunnen helpen

Luckily, I could help him.        Gelukkig kon ik hem helpen.

To be able to- 

 kun je met alle werkwoordstijden gebruiken.

Luckily, I was able to help him.

Gelukkig kon ik hem helpen.

Je hebt toestemming om iets te doen

Om aan te geven dat iets van iemand mag,

Can, could or to be allowed to gebruiken

Dad says I can stay until 11 p.m.

Dad said I could stay until 11 p.m.

Will you be allowed to stay until 11 p.m.

Je steelt een beleefde vraag

Om beleefd te vragen of iets mag of kan,  can of could, soms in combinatie met please.

Could is beleefder dan can.

Can I have a glass of water, please?

Could I have a glass of water, please?

___________________betekent "kunnen" of "in staat zijn".                 

                     Je kunt alle werkwoordstijden gebruiken.

___________________betekent "mogen" of "toestemming krijgen".

                     Je kunt alle werkwoordstijden gebruiken.

___________________betekent "kunnen", "mogelijk" of "in staat zijn" 

                     Je kunt het alleen gebruiken in de present simple.  

___________________betekent "zou kunnen" of "zou mogen", of in 

                    de verleden tijd, met de betekenis "konden/mochten".
