 It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits

Fairies had bad tempers. They got angry if you bothered them or spoiled their fun. On Samhain Eve, you might find fairies in a field dancing with ghosts. They played pranks and caused mischief. If you upset them, they could bring nasty weather to spoil your crops.
