Today, we'll share what arguments we've come up with which you can use for your essay. 

We will also look at what makes 'formal language'.

What arguments have you come up with yet? Con or pro?

In an essay, formal language rules apply. What are these rules?

Informal -> formal

Have a look at the following phrases: what 'method' is used to make the language more formal?

Example 1 - what method?

Informal	Formal
We treat the refugees with some humanity	The refugees are treated fairly
Dr. Pepper has proven that this is the right course of action	It has been proven that this is the correct route

Now try it yourself:
1) They spend too much time online.

Example 2 - what method?

Informal	Formal
That sweater is really ugly!	That sweater is rather unsightly.
The drink wasn't very nice.	The beverage was undrinkable.

Now try it yourself:
1) Bummer! I can't go to that party!

Formal language rules

- use 'expensive' vocabulary

- do not use contractions

- use more complex sentences / grammar

- use an array of linking words

- use the passive voice

- use single verbs instead of phrasal verbs
