In the next few lessons you are going to read one of the greatest stories ever written in English literature: Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. It is the story of a poor boy, born in a workhouse (government institution for the poor), who throughout the novel bounces between good and bad fortune. In this novel, Dickens highlights some of the terrible injustices of the nineteenth century, including ‘baby farms’, where poor orphans were kept at government expense, and suffered high death rates. The story is split up in several parts. After each part there will be some questions and tasks.
Enjoy!
