Three letter codes

Every destination in the world is identified with a three-letter code. 

Some destinations have more than one three-letter code, normally when there is more than one airport serving that particular destination. 

If this is the case, there will be a city code and an airport code.

Why are these codes important?

These codes are for speed and accuracy -> 

Did you know that there is a London in Canada, and a city called Sydney in Canada too? Imagine boarding your flight to London, England and getting off the plane in 7.5 hours in Canada? 

Or expecting to fly to Australia and arrive in Sydney, Canada after 7 hours? 

Three-letter codes are used by all airlines and you will see them on websites, tickets, baggage labels and other documentation if you are working at an airport.

For example:

NYC is the city code for NEW YORK CITY. 

New York is served by three international airports: 

John F Kennedy, Newark and La Guardia.

Newark EWR

La Guardia LGA

This is also true for London in the United Kingdom. 

The city code for London is LON.

London has 6 airports serving it:

London Heathrow LHR               London Luton LTN

London Gatwick LGW                 London City LCY

London Stansted STN                Southend SEN
