When do you use Past Perfect?
- If you want to add information to a story / text.

- If you want to tell something that happened before something else happened in the past.

It is the past of the past.

When do you use Present  Perfect?
-  to indicate a link between the present and the past

- When the time period referred to has not finished

It is the past with a result in present
have\has + part participle
I have lost my keys

Past Perfect and Present Perfect
Past Perfect : something happened in the past BEFORE something else happened in the past.
had + past participle

Present  Perfect : something happened in the past but we have a result  in present
Have|has + past participle

Past Perfect Continuous : I was cleaning the house when my mother came home.
