You will:
  • Understand key terms such as prejudice, racism and discrimination
  • Make links between beliefs, behavior and prejudice
  • Investigate the ways in which people respond to racist behavior
  • Reflect on whether or not religion adds to or reduces prejudice
Because:
  • We need to understand what it means to be part of a multi-cultural society and how religious and non-religious responses can help in supporting tolerance and acceptance between people
  • It is important to understand how racism develops as a result of factors such as wealth, history, fear and lack of knowledge

Key Words - §2.1
Stereotype = A generalized and simplistic mental idea of a group which is usually negative.

Prejudice (Vooroordeel) = Believing some people are inferior or superior without even knowing them.

Racism (Racisme) = 1. poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race; 2. the belief that some races of people are better than others.

Unconscious bias = prejudices and stereotypes individuals have about certain groups of people that they aren’t consciously aware of having
