Word gebruikt om:

- Bevelen te geven

- Commanderen

- Instructies geven

- Advies geven

- Waarschuwen

Examples (+):

Go straight ahead and turn left.

Watch out!

Drink 2 litres of water a day.

Leave me alone.

Imperative with let's (wij):

Gerund

De gerund is een vorm van het werkwoord (stam + ing) die gebruikt wordt als zelfstandig naamwoord.

Deze wordt gebruikt:

a Als onderwerp:   Swimming is fun

b Na voorzetsels (about, in, off, at, of, without, by, before):

   He left without paying

c  Na de werkwoorden zoals:   begin, start, like, love,  enjoy, stop, finish, hate 

I like swimming.

Harriet enjoys reading.

We don't prefer kayaking over canoeing.

I finished reading the book yesterday

I hate getting out of bed

In alle andere gevallen gebruik je een zogeheten infinitief (to + hele werkwoord) na de genoemde werkwoorden like, hate, enjoy, love, remember, prefer, start, continue, keep, begin en stop:
