Exercise 2
Point
Evidence
Explanation
As a young child, Stanley was lonely
Many times, as a child, Stanley played on his own: ‘When Stanley was younger he used to play with stuffed animals, and pretend the animals were at camp’.
The writer shows how toys became Stanley’s little friends. It is evident that Stanley was lonely. Playing like this, I think he probably fel less lonely

Slide 21 - Diapositive

Exercise 2 answers
Point
Evidence
Explanation
At school, Stanley felt insecure and had no real friends.
He didn’t have any friends at home.
He was overweight and the kids at his middle school often teased him about his size.
Even his teachers sometimes made cruel comments without realizing it.
The writer indicates that at school Stanley was teased by many children, maybe even bullied. And apparently the teachers did not help him either. This way, it must have been almost impossible for Stanley to make real friends at school and to feel good about himself.

Slide 22 - Diapositive

Exercise 2
Point
Evidence
Explanation
Stanley happens to be in a bad situation, but he is a positive person and is going to make the best of it.
Maybe he'd make some friends, he thought. At least he'd get to swim in the lake.
Stanley has to go to a juvenile detention centre, but instead of worrying, he is thinking about making new friends and having a good time in the lake.
