  • Are you always fair to other people?
  • has there ever been a situation where you have treated someone unfairly?

Discuss these question
In groups of 4, look at the poem and answer/discuss the following questions:
  1. How does reading the poem make you feel and why?
  2.  Describe what Maya Angelou would think of racism. How is it (not) similar to your opinion?
  3. How has Maya Angelou experienced society when you look at the poem? Explain.
  4. Do you think that nowadays there are people who feel the same way as Angelou did? if yes, who are they and what do they stand for?

Let's do this in your groups!

- Read the stanza (=couplet) that you are given by the teacher
- Who or what do you think of when reading this part of the poem?
- Brainstorm together who/what you think of and why.
- Be prepared to share with the whole class.
 E.g. someone famous, a specifc situation etc.

  • Is the message of the poem still relevant today?
You may think of the following:
self-esteem, mental health, vacination, discrimination of gender/appereances/faith etc...

Task: Writing

Imagine Maya Angelou was alive. Write an informal letter to her:
- Give your opinion on the poem "Still I Rise". 
- Tell Maya Angelou how racism/oppression is seen today. (e.g. black lives matter, own experiences etc).
- Ask her a question that you still have.
