Lesson Goal
At the end of this class you can:  

  • recognise common nouns, abstract nouns, proper nouns, and collective nouns
  • describe the difference between countable and uncountable nouns.

Different sorts of nouns
  • common noun - a goose, a cat, a man, a woman
  • proper noun - Klaas, Appie
  • abstract noun - honesty, world peace, faith
  • collective noun - family, team, crowd

Countable nouns:
  • can get the indefinite article 'a'
  • singular and plural - one goose, two geese
  •  thus: they can be counted!
  • often something tangible and concrete

Uncountable nouns:
  • cannot get the indefinite article 'a'
  • no (direct) plural form 
  •  thus: they cannot be counted!
  • material /abstract nouns
E.g. Water needs a glass!

Quantifiers 



In vragende of ontkennende zinnen:
Much: uncountable nouns (e.g. money, information, time)
Many: countable nouns 
A lot of/lots of: bij bevestigende zinnen bij alle nouns!

Few horses remained in the paddock after cowboys had raided the ranch =  not many horses, emphasis on what is lacking! 'Weinig'

There are a few horses left of what once was a very large herd = small number, emphasis on what there is! 'een paar'

=  emphasis on the fact that there is not a lot of time. 'weinig'

We had a little time to prepare for the test.
= emphasis on the fact that there still is time to prepare for the test albeit not a lot. 'een beetje'
