The Flag

The flag exists since 1994 and can be seen as a combination of Dutch, English and African symbols.

A lot of names and words are from Dutch or English

origin due to the colonial past.

Grammar: future tense

When does the supermarket open?

1. The supermarket opens at 08:00 am.
2. The supermarket will open at 08:00 am.
3. The supermarket is going to open at 08:00 am
4. The supermarket is going to be opening at 08:00 am.

What will you give me if I help you paint your house?

1. I am going to take you to a fancy restaurant.
2. I take you to a fancy restaurant.
3. I will take you to a fancy restaurant.
4. I am going to be taking you to a fancy restaur

What are you going to do tonight?

1. Jill and I will be watching a film tonight.
2. Jill and I will be going to watch a film tonight.
3. Jill and I watch a film tonight.
4. Jill and I are going to watch a film tonight.

Different futures

If you want to express something that is going to happen in the future, you can use different ways to express future tense.

- present simple

- present continuous

- to be going to 

- will

What is the difference?

Something is scheduled to happen. 

Example: The shop opens at 08:00 am.

Example 2: The trains arrives at 10:00 am.

                                      Present simple.

Als iets volgens een vast schema of rooster gebeurd.

What is the difference?

Something is scheduled to happen. 

Example: I am working Friday night.

Example 2: We're meeting Susan at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.

                            Present Continuous

Als je een afspraak met een mens, organisatie of groep hebt in de toekomst, die in je agenda staat. 

What is the difference?

Something is planned and is certain to happen: 'to be going to'.

Example: I am going to visit my grandmother this Friday.

Example 2: Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.

                                         to be + going to + infinitive

Als je een plan of intentie hebt, of een voorspelling met bewijs doet.

What is the difference?

Something is not planned yet or uncertain to happen: 'will'.

Example: I will visit my grandmother.

Example 2: Aliens will invade the earth next year.

                                         will + infinitive

Als je iets van plan bent, maar het is nog niet zeker dan gebruik je,  of een voorspelling zonder bewijs.

Maybe, you (see) the rest of our office later this year.

Sorry, I have no time, because I (prepare) a presentation.
