What does Atticus mean when he tells Jem to be a gentleman?

Why do you think Jem broke the bonds of: 'You just be a gentleman son"?

Jem turns twelve,, do you think it's too much to ask of Jem to be a gentleman like his father?

What would you have done if you were in the same position as Jem in 1930's?

Scout tells Atticus that he must be wrong to represent Tom Robinson because most people in Maycom think it is wrong. How does Atticus respond.?

When Scout asks Atticus what n-lover is he explains why some people use the word. Atticus explains that ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favouring Negroes over and above themselves.

Then read page 124 where Jem responds to Atticus' praise of Mrs Dubois by saying: "A lady? After all those things she said about you, a lady?"

How can Atticus accept Mrs Dubois for the way she is and still admire her for being courageous? Why does Jem have difficulty with it?
