What Are Fractions?

Fractions represent parts of a whole. The top number (numerator) represents the part we have, and the bottom number (denominator) represents the whole.

Types of Fractions

There are proper, improper, and mixed fractions. Proper fractions have a numerator smaller than the denominator, improper fractions have a numerator larger than the denominator, and mixed fractions combine whole numbers and fractions.

Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions represent the same part of a whole, but in different forms. They have different numerators and denominators, but represent the same value.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

When adding or subtracting fractions, the denominators must be the same. If they are not, find a common denominator before performing the operation.

Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

To multiply fractions, simply multiply the numerators and denominators. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
