Adjectives and Adverbs

Een bijvoeglijk naamwoord (adjective) zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord (noun).

Beyoncé is a                nice              lady.

                                     adjective            noun

Een bijwoord (adverb) zegt iets over een werkwoord (verb) of over een ander bijwoord of bijvoeglijk naamwoord.

Het bijwoord komt NA het werkwoord.

He         talked         nervously.

            verb              adverb

Een bijwoord dat iets zegt over een ander bijwoord of bijvoeglijk naamwoord staat VOOR het andere bijwoord of bijvoeglijk naamwoord:

That man drives terribly slowly.

They live in an extremely large house.

adverb = adjective + ly

bijwoord = bijvoeglijk naamwoord + ly

adjective:    the beautiful girl

adverb:         she sings beautifully

    adjective:            medeklinker +y (easy)

    adverb:                 ily (easily)

Be careful!!

    adjective:         ends with -ic (fantastic)

    adverb:              +ally (fantastically)

Be careful!!

                      adjective -le             =             adverb -ly

                        terrible                                       terribly

- Meeste bijwoorden maak je door -ly achter bijv. nw te zetten:

beautiful - beautifully            

Maar!

bijvoeglijke naamwoorden die eindigen op:

- le                                  wordt -ly             terrible - terribly 

- medeklinker + -y     wordt -ily            easy - easily 

- ic                                  wordt -ally          fantastic - fantastically 

Be careful!!

Sommige bijvoeglijke naamwoorden hebben een heel ander bijwoord.

He is a good boy. - He studies well.

Bij sommige bijvoeglijke naamwoorden is het bijwoord hetzelfde!

Bij fast, long, fair, low

That is a fast car. - It drives fast. 

Be careful!!

Bij sommige werkwoorden (zintuigen) gebruik je geen bijwoord, maar een bijvoeglijk naamwoord.

to be (zijn), to seem (lijken), to feel (voelen), to smell (ruiken), 

to sound (klinken), to taste (smaken)

Het ruikt vreselijk. - It smells terrible.
