Independence day AKA: the 4th of July



The quick sum up.

What?: The declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress.

When?: 4th of July 1776

Why?: American Colonies were tired of being ruled by Great Britain -> Wanted to become an independent country

The declaration of independence
Between 1607 and 1732 the British founded thirteen colonies:
 Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

These colonies were unhappy with the way Great Britain ruled over them. 

Thomas Jefferson led a committee, this document was signed by the colonies

Thanksgiving
Each year Americans in the United States celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday on the fourth Thursday of November.

 One of the best things about Thanksgiving is spending time with family.

The Native Americans interpret this day as The Mourning Day. Gather at a hill viewing the Plymouth Rock

Black Friday
Black Friday is an informal name for the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. 

Black Friday has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States.

A lot of shops start to make huge profits during this day. Some finally get into black instead of red numbers. Hence the name Black Friday.

Guy Fawkes
Lots of laws against the Roman Catholics. Guy Fawkes a roman Catholic felt that they were being treated unfairly.

in 1605, a man named Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Parliament in London! But failed.

The king was so pleased they weren't blown to pieces, so he decided that the 5th november would be a day to celebrate -> Bonfire Night!

  • Britain doesn't have a national holiday. Christmas celebrated very extensively.
  • Preparation can take up to two months.
  • Christmas in England can take up to four days!
