  • Founded in oktober 1947 

  • 193 member countries 

  • Security Council:
5 permanent members (United States, United Kingdom, France, China, Russia)  and 10 rotating countries


  • Don't forget: the permanent countries have veto right. If one of them uses it, the plan will not go through

  • UN peacekeeping force  - (blauwhelmen) tries to protect and enforce peace and security in conflictzones, only deployable for pecaefull misions 
  • Internationaal Court - In The Hagu, makes rulings about differences of opinion between countries with the aim of preventing conflicts from getting out of hand

  • Unicef - Ensures that the rights of children are respected and adhered to around the world. Particularly in developing countries
  • World health organisation (WHO) -Advises governments on hazards threatening the health of the world's population. 
  • Unesco -  Promotes international cooperation in education, science and culture. Protection and preservation of world heritage.

Massacre Srebrenica 
11 July 1995
  • Dutch UN soldies, Dutchbat, have the task to protect the city of Srebrenica against Serbian troups eschermen tegen de Servische troepen led by general Mladić
  • There are thousands of fled Bosnian muslims in the city 
  • They hope they will be safe in the city 
Dutchbat is een afkorting van Dutch Batallion (Nederlands bataljon), het Nederlandse onderdeel van de VN-vredesmacht. Het laatste bataljon, Dutchbat III, was aanwezig bij de val van Srebrenica.

Why didn't Dutchtbat do more?
Dutchbat did not have a mandate from the United Nations to use force, besides to protect themselves 
They were equiped with light weapons only and tanks for transport.
