Mind the difference!

I met Tom at school.( when we both were at school as students)

I met Tom at the school. (place where we met e.g. because our children are at the same school.)

Ben je ergens voor het DOEL van het gebouw dan geen The.

Is het een ontmoetingsplek dan wel THE.

What is the difference in meaning?

Mind the difference!

Australians are known for their laid-back character.    (groepsleden) 

The Australians have just arrived together with the Dutch delegation.  (groep)

• After both, all and most 
• titles/function of 1 person: President, Prime Minister, King
• continents, countries (unless The  is part of the name - The Netherlands) names of cities, streets and lakes.
• After some fixed expressions: at sea, at church, at school, at university, in prison, in hospital, at work, by car, on foot, etc.

Let op:

like gebruik je als het erop lijkt, maar het niet is.

It smells like honey( but it is a flower, not honey)

as gebruik je als het net zoals iets anders is ( dus gelijk)

It rains a lot in Austria as it does in The Netherlands( het regent dus in beide landen veel)
