Look for the form of the text: what kind of text is it? This helps you to get the gist.
Look at the heading. This tells you what the text will be about.
Look at the images. This also tells you what the text is about.
Look at the assignment. Then you know what you need to find in the text.

Skim; look for clues
Questions about certain information: Scan; look for specific words/numbers e.g.
If a question mentions a line number: read the whole paragraph to see the context.
Multiple-choice question: always in order of the text; read the question, then the text, then the answer possibilities.
