When not to use the past perfect
You don't always have to use the past perfect with two events in the past.
We only use the past perfect when the focus is on the fact that one thing happened before another thing.

Yesterday, I went to the store, bought some corn, ate the corn, and fell asleep.
Before a fell asleep, I had bought some corn.

I drank a lot of RedBull and went to the gym.
Before I went to the gym,  I had drunk a lot of RedBull.
