Grammar 6 - A, An & The

A & An betekenen allebei 'een'. Je gebruikt ze echter op verschillende manieren:

1. A

'A' gebruik je als een woord begint met een medeklinker, of het klinkt als een medeklinker:

• A story
• A book
• A uniform (spreek je uit als /juniform/ )
• A university (spreek je uit als /juniversity/)

2. An

'An' gebruik je als een woord begint met een klinker, of het klinkt als een klinker (a, e, o, u, i).

• An apple
• An accent
• An hour (je spreek de /h/ niet uit - /our/)
• An honor (je spreekt de /h/ niet uit - /onor/)

3. The

'The' betekent 'de' of 'het' in het Engels. 

Je gebruikt 'The' niet voor namen van bijvoorbeeld een meer, winkels of straatnamen. 

• We visited Lake Huron in America.
• We bought food at Albert Heijn.
• Our school is at Oranjestraat 2.

1. Past simple

Je gebruikt de past simple om te praten over iets dat in het verleden is gebeurd en ook is afgelopen.

Vorm: 

1. werkwoord + -ed

2. Onregelmatige werkwoorden 

1. Past simple - voorbeelden

I called her yesterday.

We wrote a story in class last week.

She cooked dinner last night.

My friends and I went to New York last year. 

2. Past continuous

Je gebruikt de past continuous als je praat over iets dat voor een langere tijd aan de gang was in het verleden, maar werd verstoord door iets anders. 

Vorm:

Was / were + werkwoord + ing

2. Past continuous - voorbeelden

He was listening to music.

They were waiting for the bus when we arrived. 

I was talking to my friend.

We were walking in the park when I fell. 

3. Present perfect

De present perfect gebruik je als je praat over iets (ervaringen, gebeurtenissen) die in het verleden zijn begonnen, en nu nog steeds bezig zijn of wat je nog kunt merken. 

Vorm: 

1. have / has + werkwoord + ed

2. have / has + onr. ww

3. Present perfect - voorbeelden

They have lived here since 2013. 

I haven't seen him since this morning. 

We have worked for 5 hours. 

She has been here since last night.
