reclaim halls
  • Schiphol has 4 reclaim halls 
  • here you find the baggage belts for arriving baggage
  • responsible for this process is: BASS (Baggage Airport Service Schiphol)
  • 16 reclaim carousels (or luggage belts, conveyor belts)
  • 3 odd size belts

your role as PGSA
  • If you work in a reclaim hall, you might expect many questions about which flight will be arriving on which belt. 
  • It's very useful to know what belt is in which of the 4 halls.
  • The Schiphol app gives a lot of information about arrivals: what time does a flight touch down, on which baggage belt will the baggage arrive?

responsible for baggage:
Not Schiphol (AAS), but the handling agent of the airline is responsible for the baggage. 

Active handling agents at Schiphol (at this moment): 
Aviapartner, Dnata, Menzies, Swissport, KLM and Viggo

baggage workers on the platform:
  • unloaders to get the baggage out of the belly
  • drivers  for the trucks
  • unloaders to load the baggage onto the baggage belt in the reclaim hall

baggage is usually being delivered within 20-40 minutes after landing on the belt in the reclaim hall

  • Airside: these are all areas, for which you can only get access by passing a security checkpoint (and for which you need an airport pass) 

  • Airside is divided in 4 areas:
  1. traffic area (verkeersareaal)
  2. landing area (landingsterrein)
  3. technical area (technisch areaal)
  4. cargo (vracht)

  • Chain of safety: as safe as the weakest link
  • Schipholpass: different colours for different areas
  • Koninklijke Marechaussee (KonMar) is visibly responsible for  safety at the airport
  • Customs (douane) responsible for im- and export of goods (also think of drug trafficking...)
