What are linking words?

definition

Linking words are sometimes called linking phrases (they can be made up of more than one word), connectors or even linkers.

In short, they connect ideas together. We use them in both writing and speaking, but they are most important in writing because they provide structure to your paragraphs.

Linking words can connect two parts of one sentence. They go at the beginning of a sentence or in between the two parts.

• Although it was summer, George was wearing a thick coat.
  
• George was wearing a thick coat although it was summer.

use of linkers

Linking words provide a structure to your writing. 

They also inform the reader or listener of what is to come.

Each linker has a specific use.

Example.
Complete the sentence:
Maria invited all of her friends to the party. Unfortunately…

Complete the sentence:
I won't be at school tomorrow, because....

Complete the sentence:

Magister isn't working properly, as a result I.....

but

due to

moreover

as a result

Tt is raining at the moment,

.......... they say it'll be dry this afternoon

The plane can't land at Heathrow Airport, ...........bad weather.

It was a very cold and dark day, .............it snowed from time to time.

Jack didn't hand in his essay, ..............his teacher is very disappointed.

Combine the two phrases and make it one sentence by using a linker.

The cat is not getting wet. It is under the roof.

Now connect it with another linking word, but keep the meaning the same.
