See, Think, Wonder is a learning technique, a so-called thinking routine, from Visible Thinking (Project Zero, Harvard University). The goal of Visible Thinking is to make students' thinking visible: what steps do they take in their minds to arrive at an answer.

Using images in a lesson is beneficial and important in any subject. Especially now that you have a (large) digital screen available, you can easily show the most beautiful images to your students. Because students tend to draw conclusions quickly, before they have really examined the image thoroughly, See, Think, Wonder incorporates a few steps.

In this learning technique, students are shown the same image three times. Usually, it's a captivating, appealing image that immediately captures students' attention.

How do you use it?
The first time you show the image, ask the question: "What do you see?" By clicking on the image, students can look closely at it and enter their answer using their device. Enlarging the photo has another important advantage, in addition to the reasons mentioned earlier: students cannot see who among their classmates has already responded. This way, they are genuinely engaged with the image and not preoccupied with their peers.

In the second part, Think, you show the image again. You accompany it with the question: "What do you think?"

The students' curiosity has been piqued enough to move on to the third part of the teaching method, Wonder. In this part, you ask the question: "What are you still wondering about?" The students will now come up with various questions about the images and, consequently, about the subject matter you are going to cover.

Aardappeloproer
1917
