Teaching for the First Time with LessonUp (3/4)

I HAVE MADE A LESSON. WHAT NOW?

You are going to teach with LessonUp for the first time. That's exciting! It's actually very easy to teach with LessonUp. Let's go through some practical tips that will help increase your confidence. 
Once your lesson is ready to be taught, click on 'Start lesson' in your editing area.

Students can actively participate during your lesson by typing the lesson's pin code in lessonup.app. In this video, Claire explains how this works.

In other lesson plans, we will talk more about alternative teaching methods, such as addressing the whole class directly or teaching remotely.

OPTIONS DURING TEACHING

During teaching, you can use the options that you can view in the black bar at the bottom of your screen. We will guide you through the most important ones.
1. The pin code of your lesson
The six-digit pin code at the bottom left of your screen is the code that students can type in lessonup.app (or within the LessonUp app) to actively participate during your lesson.

2. Number of students
Next to the pin code, you can see the number of students currently participating in your lesson.

3. Sound
You can turn the sound on or off. This refers to the audio that you and your students hear during the interactive parts of the lesson, or when the timer stops.

4. Devices in the classroom
This option is automatically enabled. If you don't want your students to use their devices (phone, tablet, or laptop), you can disable this option. It will also lock the pin code, preventing new students from joining the lesson.

5. Show on student's screen
This option allows you to display the entire slide on your students' screens. This way, you can choose where you want their focus to be: on their screens (for example, to work on answering a question independently) or on the classroom's interactive whiteboard (digibord).
7. Drawing
By using the pencil tool, you can draw on your slides. This feature is only available for teachers, not for students.

8. Asking questions
With the hand icon, you can enable or disable the option for students to ask questions through their devices during your lesson. This is especially useful when teaching remotely.

9. Closing
Click on the "X" icon to close the lesson. After that, make sure to click on "Close for good" to completely end the lesson for all your students as well.

TEST YOUR LESSON

Before teaching your lesson, it's useful to test the lesson to see what it will look like for your students. Check the following steps:

  • Open a new tab on your computer and go to lessonup.app, or open the app on your phone (iOS).
  • In your teacher account, click on 'Start lesson.'
  • Type the pin code of the lesson in lessonup.app.
  • Now, you are participating in your own lesson. Navigate through the lesson in the teacher account, while checking at the same time what it looks like in the student account.

Tip 💡: You can also use your teacher account login credentials to log into a student account. This way, you can check distributed lessons as well (read more).

🛠️ Assignment

  • Click on 'Start lesson'.
  • Participate as a student using a laptop or phone.
  • Play around with the options: show on students' screens on/off, sound on/off, etc.
