	Present Simple	Present Continuous
Wat	Tegenwoordige tijd	Onvoltooid tegenwoordige tijd
Wanneer	Gewoonte, regelmaat, feiten, vaste tijdschema's	Iets dat nu, op dit moment aan de gang is.
Hoe?	I, you, we, you, they => hele ww. ‘HE SHITS’ => he, she, it + -s	Am/ is / are + ww + -ing
Signaalwoorden	always, sometimes, never, ever, regularly, every, often at…	now, right now, as we speak, currently, at the moment, Look!, Listen!
Voorbeeld	I always eat cornflakes for breakfast. The train leaves at 3 o’clock.	We are reading this PP at the moment Listen! The baby is crying.

Past Simple

Past Simple

You use the past simple when something happened in the past and is finished

Past Simple - Regular Verbs

After a regular verb you put '-ed'

I walk -> I walked

He walks -> He walked

They walk -> They walked

Past Simple - Regular verbs

Spelling:
Als een werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker + -y, dan verandert de -y in -ie:

• I carry - I carried

Let op, er verandert niets als het werkwoord eindigt op klinker + -y:

• I play - I played

Als een werkwoord eindigt op -e, dan komt er in de past simple alleen een -d achter:

• I live - I lived

In de past simple wordt de laatste medeklinker verdubbeld als er één klinker voor staat:

• I drop - I dropped

Past Simple - Irregular verbs

Some verbs in English are irregular, this means that in the past tense they don't get '-ed' at the end, but have their own form.

To write -> wrote; I wrote her a letter last week

to go -> went; He went to Italy last year

to make -> made: They made a very nice meal two days ago

Past Simple - Irregular verbs

There are no rules for the irregular verbs, you just have to learn them by heart

Past Simple - Signal word

In Dutch signal words are called 'signaal woorden'  

These word help you to see if something happened in the past

• yesterday
• last week
• ten minutes ago
• in 2007

My sister .......... (play) the guitar last year.

They ....... (go) home after school yesterday.

Past Continuous: wanneer gebruik je die?

De Past Continuous gebruik je als je wilt aangeven dat je in het verleden iets aan het doen was en er tegelijkertijd iets anders gebeurde. (dit staat dan in de Past Simple) 

When I was reading a book, my mother came in.

She was singing out loud when the doorbell rang.

He was doing his homework when is father came in.

Simple past

The pupil WAS SLEEPING when the teacher TOLD him to read.

Past Continuous: hoe maak je die? 

Past Continuous maak je als volgt:

was / were + werkwoord + ing

voorbeeld: I was sleeping when my alarm clock went off.

voorbeeld: They were laughing when the teacher came in.

Was gebruik je bij I/He/She/It

Were gebruik je bij You/They/We

Paul (to sleep) when his father came in.

1. is sleeping
2. was sleeping
3. were sleeping
4. sleeps

The haidresser (to cut) my hair when another client came in the salon.

1. were cutting
2. cuts
3. is cutting
4. was cutting

Vertaal deze zin en maak gebruik van de Past continuous:
Ik was een boek aan het lezen toen mijn zoon/dochter de woonkamer binnenkwam.

Modal verbs 

Wat? Hulpwerkwooden

Wanneer? Bij allerlei situaties  zoals: talent, mogelijkheid, verplichting, toestemming, regels en advies.

Waneer gebruik je nou welke modal verb?

vaardigheid (ability)=> can/could

Mogelijkheid (possibility) => May/might/could can

Toestemming (permission) => Can / could /may

Verplichting (obligation) => must/ have to

Advies (advise) => should 

Must vs. Have to

Must = vind je zelf dat het moet

I must go to the toilet!

Have to = als het van iemand anders moet (regel/wet)

You have to be 18 to drink alcohol in the Netherlands.
