Verbs in the Past

Regular verbs
- Most verbs have a past tense (verleden tijd) and a past participle (voltooide tijd) with -ed

Simple Past (verb -ed)
I lived here last year.
Gebruik: het gebeurde in de verleden tijd en het is duidelijk of belangrijk wanneer dat was. Je kunt altijd aanwijzen wanneer het was.

Present Perfect (have/has + past participle)

I have lived in Mexico.
I have lived in The Netherlands for the past two years.
Gebruik: om aan te geven dat iets voltooid is, maar het is niet belangrijk wanneer. Of wanneer iets in het verleden begonnen is en nu nog steeds zo is.

Irregular verbs
A large part of the commonly used verbs are not formed with -ed. They have their own form in the past tense. We call those verbs the irregular verbs (onregelmatige werkwoorden).

Simple Past (irregular verb in the past)
I forgot to turn off the light when I left the house.
We spoke all night.

Present Perfect (have/has + past participle)
I have been here before.
