What fake news have you come across?

Be carefull!

There is a catch. Sometimes news can be true. but is blown out of proportion. For example:

Last year 1 person voted for person X.

This year 2 people voted for person X.

But the headline says: Breaking news! Votes for person X have doubled!

Fake news quiz time!

Two-headed sharks found.

Two-headed blue sharks are more common because the females have a lot of eggs—and thus more opportunity for abnormalities.

Police in Germany rescue man chased by baby squirrel.

It sounds unlikely, but this did happen - the police sent out a patrol car to help, but luckily the chase ended when the baby squirrel curled up and fell asleep. You can find this reported on The Guardian and the BBC

Elderly woman trains 65 cats to steal from her neighbours.

If a headline contains big numbers (like 65 cats) it's a clue that it might be clickbait - it's trying to get you to click on the page to make money from advertising. This story is completely made up!

Camel survives after losing half of its body after stepping on a landmine.

This story was based on a fake photo. You know you shouldn't trust pictures on the internet!

Climate activist Greta Thunberg told people in China to stop using chopsticks to save trees.

False. There is no evidence teen climate activist Greta Thunberg made this statement about chopsticks. The claim has been circulating online since January 2020.

Challenge time 

In a group of 2 you will come up with a device that should only be available in 20 years. But now you are going to create a fake news article about this item or device and it has suddenly been created in 2022. 

How should I start?

1. Think of a device or object.

2. Think about the specifics for this product. (For example: how is it made, what materials does it need, where did we find it, which country created it?) 

3. Let your imagination run wild, the object cannot be weird enough!

4. Write a believable fake news article (come up with a scientist, create a fake author/source, focus it on specific group of people).
