Modals with negation

Present Perfect

Dutch: voltooid tegenwoordige tijd

Rule: ...?

Present Perfect

Dutch: voltooid tegenwoordige tijd

Rule: subject + have/has + past participle

Past participle = voltooid deelwoord 

• Regular verbs: basisvorm ww + ed (= same as past simple)
• Irregular verbs: leren! (Irregular verbs lijst, 4e rij)

Present Perfect

Use: 

• something happened in the past and is still important (link between past and present)
• talk about something that began in the past and is still going
• talk about experiences up till now

Key words: just, recently, already, yet, ever, since

Modals

Modals = hulpwerkwoorden

Can, could, should, to have to, to be able to, must

Always followed by an infinitive (= verb without to)

Modals with negations

General rule for negations, add not / n't

• "We couldn't find you anywhere!"
• "You cannot tell her yet."
• "He isn't able to attend."

Exception: 

modal verb to have                   do/does + not/n't + have to

• "You don't have to come, if you don't want to."
