Present simple 

Je gebruikt de present simple om te zeggen dat iets:

• regelmatig gebeurt of een gewoonte is
  
• een feit is of in het algemeen zo is

Present continuous

Je gebruikt de present continuous om aan te geven dat iets nu aan de gang is. In het Nederlands gebruik je dan vaak ‘zit te’, ‘sta te’, ‘aan het …’.

Je gebruikt de past continuous om aan te geven dat iets in het verleden op een bepaald moment aan de gang was.

• Michael was watching TV.
  

Past simple & Past continuous

Je gebruikt de past simple en de past continuous samen in een zin om aan te geven dat iets gebeurde (simple) terwijl iets anders al aan de gang was (continuous).

• Michael was watching TV when John phoned him.
