Prosperity and culture

- Lived a lot of painters in the Netherlands 

- rich citizens often bought paintings 

- Special in comparison to the rest of Europe

- in other countries, monarchs, high nobles and the church would order paintings 

- Art flourished like never before!

- The citizenry was powerful and rich, thanks to the flourishing economics (overseas trade)

- The art of painting is the most famous example of the Republic's civic culture

- Other arts also flourished, such as literature and architecture!

A lot of freedom

- The Republic had more freedom than other European countries.

- There was freedom of conscience (no persecution), but not of religion.

- The state religion of the Republic was Calvinism

- Only Reformed believers, as Calvinists were called, could become regents.

Migrants

- A lot of migrants came to the Netherlands during the Golden Age.

- They had different reasons for their emigration form their country

- Important push factors (reasons to leave a place) were poverty, war violence, and religious beliefs.

- Pull factors (reasons to settle somewhere) were  religious freedom, safety, prosperity, and employment.

- The arrival of migrants was important for the economy of the Republic.
