Retrieval Practice Session
Slide 1 - Tekstslide
List three aspects from last session and give a brief account for each one
Slide 2 - Open vraag
Anagen
Anagen: the hair is actively growing
Longest growing phase (affects 85% of hair at any one time).
Average growing phase lasts 1 to 6 years.
People with long hair have longer anagen cycle.
People with shorter anagen cycle will never have long hair.
Slide 3 - Tekstslide
Catagen
Catagen: the stage where changes occur
At the end of the anagen phase, hair growth stops.
This is the catagen phase, lasting roughly 2 weeks.
No new cells are produced in dermal papilla.
Hair follicle shrinks to one sixth of its original length
Slide 4 - Tekstslide
Telogen
The stage where the follicle ‘rests’ and no hair is growing.
Period of rest for hair follicle and dermal papilla.
Telogen lasts roughly 10 to 12 weeks.
About 10–15% of follicles in telogen at any one time.

The cuticle
Is made of transparent overlapping scales which protect the hair. Chemicals lift the cuticle to allow chemicals to penetrate the cortex. Heat also opens the cuticle.
The cuticle scales ideally should be closed from root to tip to give hair shine and lustre. Healthy hair reflects light and . Damaged cuticle scales will make the hair feel porous and appear dull. Key characteristics of the cuticle
In good condition they are water repellent
When damaged will allow more water to be absorbed into the hair
The Cortex
This is the section under the cuticle and is where most of the action happens.
Your natural colour is determined in the cortex and this is where artificial colouring mostly takes place.
It is this layer that has the bonds which hold your hair in place to determine if your hair is straight , curly or wavy.
Where hair is temporarily or chemically changed from straight to curly or curly to straight.
It is the main part of the hair that gives it its strength and elasticity.
The Medulla
This is the least interesting layer. It is the central part of the hair but is not always present
In a single strand it may fade in and out or be present the whole way through.
