The first tense and structure we will discuss are:

=> Simple future (will)

=> to be going to + inf

Will is used fot predictions that are NOT based on evidence, but on your own opinion. 

=> I think, I hope, I expect, ...

Plans and intentions = NOT fixed (het ligt nog niet vast. 

You haven't invited her yet, you haven't decided when to invite her, but you are going to do that some time in the future.

So: in the sentence like in the example both are correct. 

BUT

* I think the weather will be nice because it is my birthday.  => You can only use WILL here

* I have studied the weather charts. The weather is going to be nice next week. => you can only use going to here.
