Phrasal verbs - things to remember
  1. You can't always figure out the meaning just by looking at
    the separate words
           turn = rotate    but: Can you turn on the TV? = activate
  2. Can have multiple meanings: take off
    Take off
    your jacket, please. = remove
    The plane is going to take off soon. = depart/leaves
  3. = look at the context!
  4. some are separable = scheidbaar -> I need to put on my dress.
                                                            -> I need to put my dress on.

Phrasal Verbs
  • two or more parts
  • one is a verb,  and at least one particle, a preposition/adverb like up, along, around, on 
  • the combination has a meaning of its own  (could be more than one)
  • cf. to turn up, to put up with
  • Mostly informal use (spoken English)
