Quantifiers: Much and Many
There are many quantifiers (rangtelwoorden):

Much and Many both mean 'veel'
When do we use which one?

Look at the following sentences, what are the differences?
I don't have much water.                It doesn't make much sense.
I don't have many dollars.              It has many uses.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Grammar rule! (Aantekening)
We use many for things we can count!
Many cats (1 cat, 2 cats.)
Many problems (1 problem, 2 problems)

We use much for things we can't count!
Much money (1 money, 2 moneys)
Much water (1 water, 2 waters)

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Uitzondering: A lot of (Aantekening)
'A lot of' is the informal form of much/many. It's usually used in positive sentences:
There isn't much water -> There isn't a lot of water
I don't have many dollars -> I don't have a lot of dollars

But for questions it changes the meaning:
Is there not much food left?   -> Hier neem je aan dat er weinig eten over is.
Is there not a lot of food left? -> Hier neem je aan dat er veel eten over is.

Let op: A lot of betekend al 'heel veel', je kan er dus geen very voorzetten. Je kan er ook geen WH-vragen mee maken: 'How a lot of things do you need to do?'
