Blood vessels

Arteries = blood vessels with thick, muscular walls that transport blood from the heart to the organs 

Capillaries = very small blood vessels

Veins = blood vessels that transport blood from the organs back to the heart

- Valves = prevent blood from flowing back; they are present in many veins and in and around the heart

Blood supply for the heart

Coronary arteries = arteries around the heart

Coronary veins = veins that transport oxygen-poor blood from the heart to a vena cava

• absorb oxygen, release carbon dioxide 

systemic circulation: 

• heart - body - heart
• release oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide

Blood pressure

= force with which blood pushes against the walls of blood vessels

Systolic pressure = the blood pressure that arises when the ventricles contract; this is the highest pressure

Diastolic pressure = blood pressure during heartbeat pause; this is the lowest pressure

Healthy blood pressure for young people = around 110/70 millimetre of mercury
