Lesson Goals

After this lesson you can mention and explain, with help of your notes, what types of listening exist.

After this lesson you can mention why it is important to know different types of listening.

After this lesson you can listen to a short fragment (monologue news report) and utilise focused listening to give the main point of the story and answer some more specific information.

Look at page 10 the text and picture. What is the theme?

It says that we are going to listen to a news report. This means...

1. there will be probably one person speaking.
2. there will be probably more people speaking.

If you look at the text again, what are some unknown words?

Focused Listening

first you read the question, then you think and then you answer the question. 

Why?
Because you only need to know that one thing.

Structured Listening

first you listen, then you think to yourself and then you answer any questions. 

Why?
Because you need to know what they are generally talking about.

- Think about what type of answer you have to give

- Listen to the fragment once

- Think some more, write some answers down
