1. Credible means that something is believable. The other three words all mean that something is not strong and can be damaged quite easily.
2. Global means worldwide. The other three words all have to do with the law.
3. Lacking means something is absent or missing. The other three words all have to do with people or things belonging to a certain area.
4. Quality means whether something is good or not. The other three words all refer to how much there is of something.
5. Alongside means something is located beside something else. The other three all mean that something is really important.

Exercise D
1. A group of 300 radical Christians live in the Bruderhof village in England.
2. £17 million is the amount of money that the furniture and toy business brings in a year.
3. Children are encouraged to leave the community for a year at age 18 to explore the world outside.
4. The Darvell community in Robertsbridge, Sussex, was established in 1971.
5. The women’s clothing in the Bruderhof is like what peasants wore in the 1920s.
6. People who are 90 can still do some work in the furniture and toy factory.
7. Around a third of teenagers choose not to return to the community at Darvell after their year out.

Exercise E
 1. The writer is pointing out that the Bruderhof is in Britain not America, which is surprising. And presuming that the reader already knows about the Amish and that they dress in an old fashioned style.

2. The purpose of the second paragraph is to explain how members of the Bruderhof community live.

3. The aspects of living in a Bruderhof community that are not ‘free’ are:
 - a choice of job and how much you can earn
 - a choice of partner or sexual preference
 - the choice to divorce

4. I think the writer emphasises that he is an ‘outsider’ to show that he is not a member of the community and that it feels special going to visit them. It also creates a ‘them and us’ feeling that accentuates the difference between the two.

5. a. It was accidental that Bernard’s parents came across the Bruderhof whilst on holiday and …
 b. Well-thought-out because they lived there for a ‘trial period’ first, before deciding to sell up and commit to the Bruderhof.

6. Personal opinion. E.g. I think it is sensible, practical and sustainable, but it could be more attractive and I think women should be allowed to wear trousers.

7. a. Trying to dress in keeping with the latest fashion is waste of thought and time according to Rachel.  
 b. Personal opinion. To a certain degree. I think it’s normal that people want to look their best and dress fashionably, but I think there are a lot more important things to think about and do than worrying about what to wear.

8. In the factory men and women take on all roles, regardless of their gender, but everyday tasks are more traditionally ’allocated’ or done, with women cooking and cleaning and men working the land.

9. Personal opinion. I think visitors to the Bruderhof are comparing life inside to life outside the community. In the outside world we are not allowed to segregate or discriminate based on gender. Men and women must be treated equally.  

 10. Personal opinion. I don’t think Esther really knows whether it’s true that others spend so much time on their phones or watching TV, as she uses the word ‘probably’. She doesn’t make a judgement, she’s just aware of the differences between them.

11. Other aspects of life in the Bruderhof are very old-fashioned, like the women’s clothing and the absence of electronic devices. That’s why it’s very surprising in contrast that the equipment in the factory is cutting-edge.

12. People with lower abilities and old people can also work on the factory’s assembly line, so they are included and can feel useful, which contributes to the sense of community. 

13.Hannah’s experience in London is partly outside the community, but she lives in a Bruderhof halfway house and so is protected in a way by not having to live completely independently.


14. Personal opinion. I think Bernard says it’s ‘healthy’ that a third of teenagers don’t return to Darvell because they are free to choose their own way of life, to experience other things in life and in the world.
