Some Short Poems
Mr. Brown the Circus Clown
Mr. Brown, the circus clown
puts his clothes on upside down.
He wears his hat upon his toes
and socks and shoes upon his nose.

My Penmanship is Pretty Bad
My penmanship is pretty bad.
My printing’s plainly awful.
In truth, my writing looks so sad
it ought to be unlawful.

All My Great Excuses
I started on my homework
but my pen ran out of ink.
My hamster ate my homework.
My computer’s on the blink.

Karla Kuskin's Poetry Tip
''Don't think about writing a poem. When I am writing, I don't usually think about writing a poem. I just think about some special thing that is on my mind, and I figure out what I have to say about it. For
instance, let's say I want to introduce you to my cat. ''

I Have to Write
a Poem for Class

-by Jack Prelutsky

I have to write a poem for class
But don't think I'll succeed,
I know I don't know all the words
That I am going to need.
I cannot quite imagine
How my poem's supposed to be —
I've got a sinking feeling
I'm not good at poetry.

My poem must have a meter
And it also has to rhyme,
It's due tomorrow morning…
How I wish I had more time!
I do not think that I can write
A poem the way I should —
But look…this is a poem right here,
And it is pretty good.

Some Short Free Verse Poems
Fog
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches and then moves on.

City of Potholes
Zig-zagging down the road
Trying not to stray over the center line
Or hit a curb
Or break an axle
Or flatten a tire
Or wind up in the next surprise sinkhole.
Driving in Toledo is not a sport
For the timid or the sane or the under
insured.

Some Short Free Verse Poems
Little Shelter Cat
I walked into the shelter and looked around.
Out of all the homeless kitties, you stood out like a beacon.
I picked you up, and you purred and snuggled sweetly in my arms.
It was like we had always known each other, always been together.
I filled out the form, made the donation, and took you home.
You're a little shelter cat no more. You're mine.
