Should (not)

Je gebruikt should (not) + infinitief als jij vindt dat iets (niet) zou moeten. Je wilt bijvoorbeeld advies of iets afraden.

My grandmother shouldn't be on her own.

* You should invite Ariel to the wedding as well.

Must (not)

Je gebruikt must (not) + infinitief als jij vindt dat iets (niet) moet.

Must is krachtiger dan should.

* They must wear a suit to the interview.

* Bryonny must help out with the project.

* You mustn't talk during his speech.

Have / has to

Je gebruikt has to / have to + infinitief om:

* zekerheid, noodzaak of verplichting uit te drukken

* te zeggen dat iets moet van iemand anders

Have / has to

* This answer has to be correct. (zekerheid)

* The soup has to be stirred continuously to prevent burning. (noodzaak)

* They have to wear a school uniform. (verplichting)

* We have to do this assignment in pairs. Mr Wright said so. (moet van iemand anders)

don't have to / doesn't have to

Als je have to in ontkennende zinnen gebruikt, dan verandert de betekenis van 'moeten' in 'niet hoeven'. Met don't have to / doesn't have to + infinitief geef je aan dat er geen verplichting is.

* You don't have to wear a tie with your suit.

* I don't have to do the dishes.

Ought to

Je gebruikt ought to + infinitief om:

* jezelf en anderen advies te geven

* te vertellen dat iets gedaan moet worden

* te vragen naar eigen verplichtingen

Vragende zinnen met ought to zijn erg formeel.

Ought to

* You ought to stay seated at all times.

* I think we ought to leave now.

* The rides ought to be checked twice a year.

* Ought I to write him an apology?
