Ancient Greece

• Because of the landscape it was hard to control the whole country.
• That's why city-states (Polis, plural Poleis) came into being.
• Every Polis had their own government, most important God and rules.

Do you think there was a shared Greek culture? Why?

Landscape troubles

• Loads of mountains, hard rock = not great for agriculture.
• Problem! What are they supposed to eat?
• Solution: looking elsewhere for fertile soil > they started establishing colonies.
• They take their culture with them > Greek culture begins to spread.
• This also gave the opportunity to trade.
• This led to much wealth.

Colony

An area that is controlled by or belongs to a country and is usually far away from it.
