6.4 A cycle

Learning objective

You will learn where natural waste goes and you will learn about the functions of organisms in the food cycle.

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

A food chain always starts with a
A
Herbivore
B
Omnivore
C
Consumer
D
Plant

Slide 6 - Quizvraag

What is this?
A
Food cycle
B
Food web
C
Food chain
D
Biotope

Slide 7 - Quizvraag

Why does the biomass (weight) in the food pyramid decrease per level?
A
Each level extracts less and less energy from the food
B
Because there are more of the consumers
C
The individuals at higher levels weigh less
D
Because not all energy is captured in building components

Slide 8 - Quizvraag

Natural waste
  • The litter layer consists of natural waste

  • Soil animals eat natural waste

  • Bacteria and fungi in the litter layer and humus layer convert the droppings of soil animals and the remains of natural waste into minerals.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Food cycle
1. Producers
The producers of glucose and other nutrients in the food cycle

2. Consumers
Animals and humans; the consumers of glucose and other nutrients in the food cycle

3. Detrivores (waste eaters)
Soil animals that eat the waste of producers and consumers in the food cycle

4. Decomposers (bacteria and fungi)
Fungi and bacteria that decompose the natural waste, so the minerals become available again for the producers

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Why farmers fertilize their land

Because plants are harvested, there is hardly any waste available for the detritivores.

Therefore, the decomposers cannot convert humus into minerals: the food cycle is broken!

Farmers use manure or chemical fertilizer to add minerals to the soil.
