What is air pressure?
Air pressure: The weight of the air pressing down on the earth.

Measure with:
-barometer
-Unit: hectopascal (hPa) or millibar (Mb

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

High pressure
High pressure = Falling air
  • This air is heavy.
  • Symbol on the map = H
  • Pressure: around 1020 hPa

Which weather type belongs to H?
- no clouds
- dry

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Low pressure
Low pressure =
  • rising air
  • the weight of that air is low.
  • Symbol on the map = L
  • pressure: around 1000 hPa

Which weather type belongs to L?
  • clouds
  • precipitation

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Which 5 types of air mass determine the wheater in the U.S.? Look at figure 8!

Slide 7 - Woordweb

Air mass
Air mass is a volume of air with a certain humidity and temperature - they are hundreds of kilometers in size.
  • Air above sea is moist
  • Air above land is dry
  • Warm in the south, cold in the north

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Air types and the effect
5 air types have a major influence on the weather
in the U.S.

These air types can cause extreme weather:
  • Northerns (cold wave)
  • Southerns (heat wave)
  • Tornadoes (will be explained later)
  • Hurricanes (next lesson)

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Air moves
Air moves due to a difference in air pressure. High to low.

The weather can vary considerably every day. Especially in spring or autumn.
One day +20, day later -10

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Air keeps changing in summer and winter as standard
- High pressure area near Florida. Brings heat, moist air -> maritime climate.
- California Mediterranean climate. High pressure area -> dry and sunny.
Winter
Much further south in winter. provides cooler weather with precipitation.

What is a tornado?

Slide 12 - Open vraag
